About the IPM Cell
One cell. Six commitments.
The Intellectual Property Management Cell was established in 2017 by Chairman Dr. K.Ramakrishnan to promote innovation and entrepreneurial skills among students, and to protect inventions developed by students and faculty members.
- 01
Awareness: workshops, seminars and training programmes on patents, copyrights, trademarks, industrial designs and trade secrets for students, researchers and faculty.
- 02
Identify & file: assist inventors in identifying patentable inventions; guide drafting, filing, prosecution and maintenance of patents and other IP applications.
- 03
Commercialise: convert research outcomes into viable products, startups, licensing opportunities and industry collaborations.
- 04
Maintain a registry: systematic database of inventions, patents, copyrights, publications and technology disclosures within the institution.
- 05
Build partnerships: with industries, research organisations, incubation centres and government agencies for collaborative research and innovation activities.
- 06
Advisory: support on IP laws, prior-art searches, patentability analysis, drafting, office-action responses and infringement matters.
Basics of IPR
Six kinds of creations.
Intellectual property law strikes a balance between innovator interests and the wider public — an environment in which creativity and innovation can flourish.
Intellectual Property
Creations of the mind — inventions; literary and artistic works; designs; symbols, names and images used in commerce. Protected by patent, copyright and trademark law to let creators earn recognition and benefit.
Patent
An exclusive right granted for an invention — a product or process that offers a new way of doing something or a new technical solution. The invention must be disclosed publicly in the patent application.
Copyright
The rights creators have over their literary and artistic works — books, music, painting, sculpture, films, computer programs, databases, advertisements, maps and technical drawings.
Trademark
A sign capable of distinguishing the goods or services of one enterprise from those of others. Trademarks are protected by intellectual property rights.
Industrial Design
The ornamental or aesthetic aspect of an article — three-dimensional features such as shape, or two-dimensional features such as patterns, lines or colour.
Geographical Indication (GI)
A sign used on products with a specific geographical origin whose qualities or reputation are essentially due to that origin — a clear link between product and place of production.
